二2two

Caught Iron Man 2 and Ip Man 2 over the weekend. Both are awesome, especially iron man for its cool special effects and its ability to always inspire one to study science and engineering and ip man, for its well choreographed fight scenes and the impeccable 葉问.

What impacted me most was the scene at 葉问 2, where the boxer from Great Britain humiliated the Chinese for their perceived inferiority and the westerner's unquestioned superiority over them. Though the arc of the story was developed purposely towards just a contrast, I just couldn't help but felt my blood boiled, simmering over the vivid pictures of fellow chinese being bullied by the affront westerners. It was at that point, where I recalled similar incidents where the chinese were humiliated and disgraced, by the japanese during world war II and also in 葉问, the eight-nation alliance that invaded and looted much of China's treasures  and many others incidents that I realised why China is asserting its views aggressively on the international stage. The Chinese has been oppressed for way too many times, having its ego punctured repeatedly that no one wants to relive just memories again, literally. It is a time to stand up when you are strong, and put up a strong front to make sure that no one dares to bully you anymore. That is why Beijing refuses to bow down to international pressure on many critical issues, such as the revaluation of yuan and imposing of sanctions on rogue states. Furthermore, given all its past experience, it is skeptical of the West, fearing that it might harbour ill intetions to maximise its gains at the expense of China.

Like what 葉问 said in the show, perhaps what is quintessential about human relationship is the respect that one ought to give another. Even though we are in 1001 ways different, the very least is to treat others as an equal human that together forge our common tapestry.

Another food for thought is the classic one liner :到底是输赢重要,还是和家人吃饭重要?

I think the question is rhetoric, isn't it?
